Rabbit Showmanship For Beginners

Watch the video

Learning the Showmanship Steps

What is the goal of showmanship?

The goal of showmanship is to:

  1. Evaluate the health
  2. Evaluate quality of the rabbit compared to its breed standard
  3. Exhibitor demonstrating that they can properly handle and care for rabbits

Your event may have a different scorecard or manual than what we describe.  Many events use the American Rabbit Breeders Association score card, but there are still a number of states and counties that use their own score card. As you are working through the showmanship section, remember to verify what your event uses.

The Rabbit Tutor Showmanship Pages are organized in the following way.  We focus on teaching the fundamentals, teaching through videos/pictures, and then how to improve your scores.  Most of the pages have activities for you to show your knowledge.

  • Showmanship for Beginners, teaching the fundamentals, posing, handling and examination
  • Identify body parts             Learning the names of each body part is an important step to build from
  • My Rabbit is healthy if...    Teaches what each body part looks like when healthy
  • Diseases & Conditions     Learn the common diseases and conditions that affect rabbits and the body part that you can see the symptoms
  • Common Mistakes           Learn what judges view as the most common mistakes made by exhibitors
  • Advanced Showmanship  Are you in a very competitive event?  Learn from top showmen as they teach what makes the difference from winning Overall Showman or 2nd place in the class.
  • Questions and Tips         What questions do judges typically ask?  What tips do judges have to improve your score?

Proper Handling

Never grab a rabbit from the scruff.  This can damage their body.  It can also cause the skin to pull away from the body, creating an area of fat deposits. It may damage the fur.

Improve Your Showmanship Score

Learn from Nichole Wilson, Wisconsin State Fair Showmanship Judge, as she discusses what makes a great showmanship exhibitor.  She gives advice on how to improve your showmanship skills.  Offering tips on handling, posing and the examination.

Begin practicing with a stuffed animal rabbit

Practice with a stuffed animal rabbit

While learning the steps use a stuffed animal rabbit.

A stuffed animal rabbit won't scratch and will be easier to turn over.

Using a stuffed animal rabbit makes it safer for you to practice.  It also protects your live rabbit.
