There are 7 body types recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association(ARBA). Let's learn about what makes each body type unique.
When the breeds pose, all breeds pose with their front feet in line with their eyes and the rear feet in line with the stifle (knee).
In these exercises you will learn how to identify the different body types.
1. High Head Mount
2. Compact
3. Commercial
4. Upright Cylindrical
5. Cylindrical
6. Semi-arch
7. Full Arch
Examples: Holland Lops, Netherland Dwarfs, American Fuzzy Lops, Jersey Wooly
The High Head Mount breed body type include breeds that pose with their head high on their shoulders.
These include Netherland Dwarf, Holland Lop, Netherland Dwarf, American Fuzzy Lop and more.
Compact breeds pose with their heads close to the table.
Rise from behind the ear base to the top of the hip, which then progressively tapers to the table. Similar to Commercial rabbits, but smaller.
Commercial body type breeds pose with their head close to the table.
Rise from behind the ear base to the top of the hip and proceeds downward to the table. Similar to Compact rabbits, but larger.
Full Arch Breeds include breeds that run and some that are posed. The breeds that run are evaluated while moving and stopping on the table. What makes these breeds unique is their long front legs, head high, showing daylight under the stomach and the hindquarters up off the table.
Breeds of rabbits that pose upright or run. They are tyipically fairly narrow in structure.
This body type was newly recognized in 2022 in the ARBA. This group includes the Czech Frosty and Blue Holicer. This is the common pose of rabbits from Europe where these breeds were created. The breeds have parallel sidelines when viewed from above. They have a straight topline that is angled downward from the high shoulder to hindquarter.
This body type has one breed: the Himalayan. This body type resembles a can of potato chips.
Rabbits within this body type are posed with their head close to the table and their bodies stretched out. They have parallel side lines.
Long and narrow with no rise over the midsection. Similar to an empty paper towel roll.
Breeds within this body type are typically very large in size, including the most common representative is the Flemish Giant. Breeds within this body type pose with their heads close to the table, a topline of long, flatter shoulders and then a rise at the back of their shoulders through the midsection and hindquarter.
